Sonia Kim

Artist Statement:

As a second generation Korean-American woman, artist, and designer, my work utilizes material and process to create new cultural objects that bridge the metaphysical gaps between the first and second generations (shi-dae). Working primarily with textiles, I use fibers as both tools and metaphors for exploring personal narratives, with the aim of creating objects that simultaneously speak to and upend Korean cultural traditions and techniques.

In exploring themes such as assimilation, displacement, orientalism, and the fragmentation of cultural identity across multiple generations, I aim to weave together my story, my mother’s story, and the story of all the women who have come before me.

Sonia lives and works in Brooklyn.
